Logarithm (log)
In mathematics, logarithms were developed as a way to simplify calculations that were otherwise difficult.
History of Logarithm

Scottish mathematician John Napier (1550–1617) invented logarithms in the 17th century as a tool for computation.

Approximately contemporaneously, Joost Burgi (1552 – 1632) devised his form of logarithms to aid in his astronomical computations.
Both John Napier (1550-1617) and Joost Burgi (1552-1632) contributed to the development of the logarithm and independently devised the logarithm, but the honor is typically given to Napier, who published his work in 1614.

English mathematician Henry Briggs ( 1561 – 1630) is most known for his work converting the logarithms developed by John Napier into the more familiar (base 10) form.
